How to format USB drive and memory stick with NTFS

If you have ever tried to format a USB thumb drive or memory stick,you may have noticed that the only options you get are FAT and FAT32file systems. This is the default behavior in Windows XP. However, withsome slight tweaking of settings, you can actually format your removable storage devices in NTFS format, including external hard drives, etc.

Of course, there is a reason why Windows defaults the formatting ofremovable storage to FAT and FAT32. There are actually a few advantagesand disadvantages to formatting a USB drive in NTFS format, so we』ll gothrough those before actually talking about how to do it.
The advantages of enabling NTFS of removable storage devicesare mostly security related. For example, an NTFS file system lets youto add allow and deny permissions on individual files and folders forspecific Windows users, something you cannot do in the FAT file system.But that』s not all in terms of security. You can also encrypt filesusing Windows XP』s built-in encryption.

Other benefits include the ability to compress files and thereforesave space on your USB drive. You can also set disk quotas and evencreate partitions! Formatting USB drives in NTFS has several advantagesthat would be good if you need to use some of these advanced features,i.e. for your IT department or if you』re just paranoid!

However, there are also a few drawbacks to using NFTS on a USBdrive. Firstly, there is a lot more writing to the drive that isrequired when using NTFS and therefore your access to the device willbe slower. Will it make a major difference that would prevent peoplefrom using it? Probably not, but it』s something to consider. Also,versions of Windows older than 2000 cannot read NTFS file systems, norcan most Linux systems.

The other major downside is that if you encrypt your files on theUSB drive, you will not be able to open them anywhere else. Actually,this can be considered a downside or an upside depending on what youwant to do. If you want to secure your USB stick so that only your useraccount on your one computer can open the files, then encrypting isperfect. If not, then do not encrypt the files.

心想，要把他格式化為「NTFS 格式」才可以支援 4GB 以上的單一檔案，結果沒想到：



見鬼啦！要格式化的時候只可以選擇「FAT32」！（OS：哇勒，難道要扔到垃圾桶嗎？）
俗諺：「天下無難事，只怕有心人！」
經過 Google 大神的指點，找到了答案，詳細的步驟分享如下：

1. 首先到【開始】→右鍵按【我的電腦】→【管理】，會開啟「電腦管理」視窗。



2. 開啟「電腦管理」視窗之後，到「裝置管理員」→「磁碟機」→右鍵按「Generic USB Flash Disk USB Device」（P.S. 這個名稱因USB廠牌而異）→「內容」。



3. 「Generic USB Flash Disk USB Device 內容」視窗，「原則」頁籤→「效能最佳化」（預設是：快速移除最佳化），這樣就可以使用 NTFS 格式化了。



4. 驗收一下：檔案總管→右鍵按「卸除式磁碟」→「格式化」。



5. 已經有「NTFS、FAT32」兩種格式可以選擇了！



NOTE：格式化完成後，就算改回去原本的設定（快速移除最佳化）也不會影響存取的功能。
